Alexander Dreyer was born in the gemstone-town Idar-Oberstein, Western Germany and grew up in the village of Niederwörresbach at the southern delimiter of the Hunsrück mountain range.

After high school und military service he studied mathematics and physics at the former University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. During that time, he visited the University of California, Berkeley for a semester abroad. After having finished his doctoral at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics, he is currently working on joint projects of the institute and Kaiserslautern University of Technology, Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Alexander Dreyer lives with his wife Irina in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
